The first year is full of rapid changes:

• 2–3 months: Smiles socially, coos, lifts head during tummy time.
• 4–6 months: Rolls over, reaches for toys, begins babbling.
• 6–9 months: Sits with little or no support, responds to name, starts crawling.
• 9–12 months: Pulls to stand, takes first steps, may say “mama” or “dada.”

Every baby develops differently, but steady progress in these areas shows healthy growth.

Most babies crawl between 7–10 months and walk around 12–15 months. Some may skip crawling altogether and go straight to standing and walking. As long as your baby is steadily gaining new mobility skills, there’s usually no cause for concern.

• 2 years: Uses 50+ words, begins simple pretend play, runs and climbs, starts showing independence.
• 3 years: Speaks in short sentences, pedals a tricycle, understands simple rules, shows early cooperation in play.
• 4 years: Tells stories, hops on one foot, asks endless “why” questions, plays more cooperatively with peers.

Some children develop skills earlier or later than average—and that’s okay. A baby who walks late may excel in speech, or vice versa. Occasional delays are usually not cause for alarm. Some babies roll one way first, then the other; what matters is progression of strength and control.

Typical milestones in healthy gross motor development include:

• Head control: lifting and holding head steady during tummy time. 
• Rolling both ways (back-to-front, front-to-back) usually by 5–6 months. 
• Sitting independently around 6–8 months.
• Crawling or moving in a crawling position (hands-and-knees) between 7-10 months.
• Pulling to stand, cruising (walking with support), and then walking independently around 9-15 months.

Progression matters more than perfect timing—each baby reaches these milestones on their own schedule.

Here are strategies that really help:

• Start tummy time from birth: short, supervised periods (a few minutes), several times a day. Gradually increase as baby becomes more comfortable.
• Use engaging stimuli: toys, mirrors, or your face placed just out of reach to encourage reaching, lifting, and rolling.
• Give baby safe space on soft but firm floor surfaces to explore movement freely. Remove obstructions.
• Support practice of transitions: help them move from sitting to crawling position, crawling to standing, etc. Frequent practice builds strength and confidence. 

Here are great toys and tools—matched by age—that help gross motor skills:

• For infants: Soft tummy time mats or play gyms, mirror on the floor, lightweight rattles or balls to reach for.
• For 6- to 12-month-olds: Push toys (walkers without wheels for early practice), crawling tunnels, objects to cruise around holds or furniture.
• For toddlers/preschoolers: Ride-on toys, balance bikes, balls to kick or throw, soft climbing structures, obstacle courses. These help with coordination, balance, leg strength, and spatial awareness.

Make sure toys are safe, age-appropriate, and allow for supervised, active play.

Skipping crawling isn’t automatically a problem—some babies go from sitting to cruising or pulling to stand without classic crawling. What matters more is whether they’re still developing muscle strength, coordination, and balance through other movements. If mobility seems limited or delayed, or if baby isn’t using hands and weight shifts, check with a pediatrician.

If by certain key ages your child isn’t showing expected milestones (e.g., no rolling by 7 months, no sitting with support by 9 months, not standing/crawling by 12 months), or if muscle tone is unusually stiff or floppy, it’s worth getting a developmental screening. Early physical or occupational therapy can help.

Babies should get plenty of floor play. For infants under 6 months, short tummy time sessions totaling 20-30 minutes spread throughout the day are beneficial; for older babies and toddlers, free movement opportunities (crawling, cruising, exploring) as much as possible.

These stages may overlap; what matters is steady growth in vocabulary and sentence length.

Daily interaction is the best teacher. Try these strategies:

• Narrate your day: Describe what you’re doing (“I’m washing the red cup”).
• Read aloud: Even a few minutes daily builds word recognition and comprehension.
• Sing songs & rhymes: Music reinforces rhythm, memory, and vocabulary.
• Ask open-ended questions: Instead of “Do you want milk?” try “What would you like to drink?”
• Repeat and expand: If your child says “car,” respond, “Yes, that’s a big red car.”

The more words your child hears, the more words they’ll eventually use.

Possible concerns include:

• No babbling or sound play by 12 months.
• Fewer than 10 words by 18 months.
• No two-word combinations by 2 years.
• Hard to understand most of what your 3-year-old says.
• Not following simple directions by 2 years.

Delays don’t always mean a serious problem, but early evaluation and intervention make the biggest difference.

Consistent face-to-face interaction—talking, playing, and reading—is more effective than apps, flashcards, or background TV. Children learn language best in real conversations with people who respond to them.

Babies develop their senses in predictable stages, though timing varies. In the first three months, infants begin to track moving objects, turn toward familiar voices, and enjoy gentle touch.
